With Coordinator / Tutor ~ Katie Nicholls
Originally from Cairns, Katie moved to Sydney in 2013 to commence her tertiary studies majoring in a Musical Theatre Degree at the Australian Institute of Music. During this time, Katie was lucky enough to work with some of the most influential musical directors, choreographers, actors, and voice teachers in the current Australian music industry. Katie’s major highlight of life in Sydney was when she had the opportunity to sing a duet with Idina Menzel in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House (Idina is a major Broadway star but is best known to most families as the voice of Elsa in Frozen). When she was not studying Katie spent her time working as a children’s entertainer and face painter.
Now back in Cairns for the foreseeable future, Katie is currently utilising her performance background by dancing for the local Northern Pride football team as a Wildcats Cheerleader. While growing up in Cairns Katie devoted all of her spare time to dance, music, and drama – including being a proud member of the Cairns Junior Choral Society for seven years! She is very excited to be returning to the CJCS in this brand new role.
~ CLASSES ~
Whether destined for Broadway or just wanting to gain confidence through self-expression, the young artists in our community can develop and strengthen their performance skills with the Cairns Junior Choral Society’s brand new Musical Theatre classes.
Musical theatre allows children to gain skills in:
- Creative thinking and problem solving
- Oral communication
- Time management
- Independent thinking
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Physical fitness
- Goal-oriented approach to work
- Dedication and determination
- Enjoyment ~ and so much more!
Our dance classes will be in the modern / jazz style – the style most often used for musical theatre auditions! You can expect a typical dance class to involve an aerobic, age-appropriate warm-up including stretches and conditioning, followed by progressions across the floor. The class will finish with a fun combination set to a mixture of traditional musical theatre songs, modern musical theatre songs and the latest music on the radio.
A typical drama class will involve a vocal and physical warm up which will be followed by exciting drama games and fun exercises that encourage teamwork, creativity, and fast thinking. This will ultimately be building towards presenting group and solo scenes learnt from a script.
WHAT TO WEAR?
We ask all participants to wear comfortable tight-fitting clothing – NO basketball shorts, baggy T-shirts, denim jeans etc. If you have long hair please tie back.
WHAT TO BRING?
Full water bottle!
Above all, these classes are to foster the love and appreciation of the arts and to prepare our young people with the necessary skills to confidently follow their dreams and reach their goals.
